The rose is a rose,
And was always a rose.
But the theory now goes
That the apple's a rose,
And the pear is, and so's
The plum, I suppose.
The dear only knows
What will next prove a rose.
You, of course, are a rose-
But were always a rose.

                Robert Frost

ROSACEAE ROSA, Rose, fresh and silk flowers, plant information for growing and its use in flower arranging

ROSACEAE
Common Name: Rose
Roses  belong to the family Rosaceae , a rather large family including quite a few food and ornamental crops. With one exception, the plants we call "roses" all belong to a single genus within the Rosoideae. The genus name is Rosa
History:
Roses, one of the earliest flowers known to man, symbolize love, magic, hope, and passion. The rose represents ultimate beauty and perfection. The name “rose” comes from the Latin word rosa, which means “red,” but roses come in many different colors including red, pink, yellow, peach, and white. To date, botanists have identified and classified 200 wild species of roses.

Nebuchadnezzar used roses to decorate his palace, and they were grown for their perfume oil in Persia. The Greeks associated roses with the blood of Aphrodite's beloved Adonis, and the Romans used so many roses in feasts and orgies that there is at least one case of guests being suffocated by rose petals falling from the ceiling.

Roses once they are picked  or received need to be conditioned.
Cut a piece of each stem at a slant so the is exposed to take up the water.Strip the leaves, and  holding the stems together, in about an inch of boiling water for about a minute.
Then stand the stems in deep warm water for at least two hours.
Nothing takes the place if this initial drink!

Using floral foan with Roses, it is absolutely essential for plant stems to be tightly wedged into the foam, to ensure transfer of water from foam cells into plant tissues. A wobbly fit between stem and foam is not only unattractive to the design, but is also deadly to the bloom!

Cut all stems cleanly at a sharp angle, and they will slice neatly through the
foam. Also make all stem cuts under water to avoid intrusion of air into stem
cells. If the stem is thorny, first trim thorns from the bottom 2 or 3 inches of
stem, to keep thorns from shredding the floral foam.  Do not pre-punch holes in the foam!

If the flower stem is weak or crooked,  attach a wooden toothpick (which is also cut at a sharp angle). Attach snugly around thre rose stem with florists wire  running the wire down the length of the pick as it is wrapped around, to hold the two together
