Philadelphus , mock orange
and its uses in floral art.
Family: Philadelphaceae
Common Name:Mock
Orange, Syringa, Pipe Tree, Philadelphus coronarius
Distribution:
Widely distributed in the
Northern Hemisphere, native to Eurasia and North America.
Characteristics
The
mock orange, or syringa, is a genus (Philadelphus) of deciduous shrubs
It is easily cultivated and has white blossoms generally similar to orange
blossoms. One of the most popular fragrant species is the common, or sweet,
mock orange (P. coronarius). Syringa [New Lat., from Gr.,=pipe], an early
name for mock orange, is now the scientific name for the unrelated lilac;
both bushes are also sometimes called pipe tree. All the species are quite
hardy and bear fragrant flowers that appear during mid summer. It
should be pruned immediately after flowering , removing all the older branches
that have flowered and aren't showing any new shoots.
The plant is poisonous to
cats |
The philadelphus, being long
and curved has been used to define the basic length and curve in
the outline in this bridal bouquet from "Wedding
Flowers" by Fiona Barnett.
This book has over
60 arrangements for a traditional wedding, to inspire, rather than
give step by step instructions.

Conditioning:
Immature foliage can be
hard to condition, but cut the stem early, float it into a dish of
water for an hour then stand in deep water for a further 2-3 hours.Keep
it cool from then on.
Flowering stems and mature
foliage just need a deep drink of water. The stems are quite twiggy
so the ends can be stripped before conditioning.
Individual blooms can be
pressed and use dessiccant for double flowers to retain thier
form.
Uses.
If you are planting a Philadephus
there is a choice of varieties. They have many attributes in flowers and
foliage. Long arching sprays of creamy white flowers enhance
the outline of a full massed design. and, as you can see from Ngaire's
design on the left, the stems of the new season's growth are quite
pliable like a vine, and make wonderful
lines in a modern design.
The leaves are traditionally
used in the leis in the Pacific Islands. P.c.'Aureus' has outstanding foliage
, in spring it is golden yellow, becoming green/yellow in summer.P.c.
Variegatus has green leaves with a creamy white margin.
Although the stems have
buds and some have the fragrant flowers,if bought in a florists, they are used in wedding
bouquets more for the foliage leaves. The normal heart shaped leaves
are lush, almost green black, matt rather than glossy. |
