Heliconia caribaea , lobster
claw and its uses in floral art.
Heliconia
Suborder: Heliconiineae
Family: Heliconiaceae
Common Name:Heliconia,
and lobster claw; (Spanish) barco de caridad,
platanillo, plátano bravo, plátano cimarrón, plátano
de flor, and tanay; (French) balisier, bananier marron, plantano cimarron,
and plantano sylvestre.
Distribution:
Natives to only Central
and South America and some islands of the South Pacific. Most species of
heliconias can be found in moist or wet regions, but some are found in
seasonally dry areas. Although Heliconias flourish in the humid lowland
tropics at elevations below 1500 feet, the greatest number of species
are found in middle elevation rain and cloud forest habitats.
Characteristics
Heliconia is the only genus
in the plant family heliconiacea, which is a member of a larger taxonomic
category called the order Zingiberales. There are several very obvious
characteristics by which they can be recognized, including large leaves
and large, colorful, bracteate inflorecences. The genus contains
between 200 and 250 species Additionally, there are at least that many
forms or cultivars.
In the American Tropics,
hummingbirds are the exclusive polinators of red, yellow , pink and orange
heliconias while nectar feeding bats are the polinators of green heliconias.

A wonderful floral artist
once said to me,"Let the plant material do what it wants to do" |
This design seen in a hotel
lobby in Singapore shows that maxim being applied as the downward
tendancy of the heliconia is used to add a waterfall affect to the design. The
top spikes of the flower stems have given the design interest and height.

Heliconias have blooming
periods of 4-5 months.
Vase life : 7-15 days.
Can be stored in their boxes
for up to 5 days. After that period, you must unpack them for display.
Never refrigerate
below 55°F. If submerging(flower)
blooms, drain water from open sheaths. Broken or bruised tips can be trimmed
if
necessary. Flowers wich
appear between bracts should be removed before use.
TEMPERATURE
The flower most sensitive
to the cold is the heliconia. Tropical flowers come from warm, humid
climates and cannot tolerate cold temperatures for extended
periods. Ideal storage temperature
is 55°F with exposure to temperatures as low as 45°F tolerable
for periods of only
4-6 hours.
HUMIDITY
The ideal level of humidity
is 90-95%. Occasional misting should be done daily to maintain this level. |
