ACCENT IN FLORAL DESIGN

Accent in flower arranging means emphasising a part of the design, by highlighting it with a strongly contrasting detail. It does not become the dominant part however but the secondary focal area.

Accent. Why bother?
By adding 1 or more accents to your arrangement you give it more interest and make it more appealing for the viewer...rather like a special extra surprise you didn't know was there until you looked a little harder.

ACCENT creates minor pause points/interest areas within the design and yet leads the viewer on through the design looking for further interest in different areas/at different dimensions/levels
Use a contrast:In Ngaire Clarke's design used accent with the top swirl of reeds emphasized by the fine gold thread binding.
Rhythm: Rhythm is built up from the shape of the stand base with the reeds flowing through the design and swirling out the top.
Proportion:By using a much smaller quantity (proportion) of leucodendron and stamens than lemon lilies they are less dominant than the main central area of lilies
Repetition ACCENT can be seen in the repetition of the colour of the stamens in the lilies being repeated in the leucodendron placements.
Guess the accent: Lois Hayden used grapes tucked under the Tulips as the accents. The darker colour draws attention to this area but is not dominant.

Accent in a posy: If you looked at those amazing Roses first, the lavender coloured flowers provide the accents to keep you interested.
When so much is gorgeous... the accent becomes the 'odd one out' element, in this case a ball of sisal wrapped in decorative wire..
A second glance: Obviously you would look at those amazing Irises first, but the busy Ting Ting tops give you the reason for a second glance.
A textural accent: Often an interesting texture gives the opportunty for a second glance providing an accent
Using white: White is a very dominant colour and to use it as an accent you need to have something even stronger in your design such as these textured bundles
Shiny pins add subtle accents: Making a pattern of decorative pins as part of your mechanics alway creates accents worth a closer look
