today's design principle
Accent

"A particular emphasis or strongly contrasting detail used to highlight a part of a design" from 'Flair' published by FASNZ.

Accent  adds another aspect to a design and will usually enhance  the area of dominance or help to  make the area of dominance stronger.

The design on the right is  by Nathalie Comparat,  a French Florist  working at La Main Fleure, in Angers, France. Tricia and Mike's French hosts bought it as a floral tribute  of thanks for a dinner we all were invited to, in Angers.

Ngaire Clarke, discusses the accent in the design: "The creamy/white in
the aspidistra leaves leads to the white chrysanthemum accent. There is a greater proportion of red than white even though the white is very eye catching. The French teach that white adds light to a design and that the placement of a white flower among all the other colours needs great care to establish good colour balance."
Ngaire Clarke, one of our guest tutors adds,

"In my design on the left  ACCENT is the top swirl of reeds emphasized by the fine gold thread binding, the rhythm is built up from the shape of the stand base with the reeds flowing through the design and swirling out the top.

As well ACCENT can be seen in the repetition of the colour of the stamens in the lilies being repeated in the leucodendron placements. There is a much smaller quantity (proportion) of leucodendron and stamens than lemon lilies therefore they are less dominant than the main central area of lilies, the stamen and leucodendron. add interest and highlight small areas away from the centre of interest.

ACCENT creates minor pause points/interest areas within the design and yet leads the viewer on through the design looking for further interest in different areas/at different dimensions/levels."

Ngaire gives you another example from her  'VINES IN A VASE' demonstration

"ACCENT can be found in the vine wire bindings on the philadelphus stem ‘fences’. This colour repeats the pale bark colour and the pale areas on the vase. Because the vine wire runs across the stems it causes the viewer to pause momentarily. The vine wire feature is not nearly as DOMINANT as the gerberas/heliconias which form the main centre of interest."

Ngaire adds, "Lois Haydon's cornucopia uses grapes which create an ideal ACCENT.  The darker colour draws attention to this area and does not overpower the DOMINANT main area of interest."

Tricia would like to gratefully acknowledge the help and guidance of New Zealand demonstrator Ngaire Clarke in the compilation of this design page element.
