Flower Arranging Style: An International Collection of Ideas and Inspirations for All Seasons
by Judith Blacklock
This book is so full of information it could be the complete text for a floristry
or floral art course. Judith Blacklock is the editor of the UK 'Flower
Arranger', and also runs her own successful floristry/floral art school in
London, and she has put her full knowledge into this book. Full of text with
smaller colour photos, it is not a coffee table book, but a solid book of
information and instruction.
The 'getting started' section will take you through available flowers season
by season, then on to the elements and principles of design, containers and
equipment. A chapter on traditional English design follows and then a full
section on design styles, and drying plant material. Show work, designs for
special occasions, festivals, shows and weddings are included all with excellent
text and examples. The final chapters show flower styles from many countries
completing one of those authorative texts that is excellent for reference,
inspiration and instruction.
Malcolm
Hillier is a prolific author of Floral art and Floristry books. The problem
is that he often repeats designs and chapters in several books and you pay
for the same information twice if you own several of his works. If you don't
want to get caught this way, I suggest you only own one Malcolm Hillier book
and that one is
Not
pictured, this is a huge hardcover that is most of his books in one
volume. It becomes a mighty reference as well as being packed full of designs
to try step by step. Starting with 'Flowers in Civilization' it covers the
history of flower arranging with illustrations from artifacts from those
periods, and then covers the colour theory and design elements and
principles of good design. The rest of the book is divided into sections
with up to 16 designs in each section with step by step instructions. They
cover fragrant display, quick creation, posies and bouquets, candles
and fairy lights, flowers for the table, floor standing displays, structured
displays, grand displays, tiny designs, long lasting dried arrangements.
The final section is a reference by alphabet and colour of plant material,
and practical techniques.
'Flowers For The Home' (left) is a separate book just covering the chapter in the bigger
volume above with over 70 designs to try,
colour and design theory, wiring, preserving, sugaring and drying techniques.
This is ideal if you don't need all the information of the more comprehensive
text
Flower Style: The Ftd Guide to Flowers in Your Home
by Pat Ross
This is a full colour glossy book with a large number of photos. The
first 60 pages covers flower types, care, cutting and tips for buying.
The second half goes through the design principles and elements and colour
theory It features simple designs in vases, requiring very little artistic
creativity, as each is really a bunch of flowers in a container.
The text covers flower identification, flowers by colour, and useful
tips and is a great book for selecting and buying flowers from the florist
for informal vase design or bouquets for the home decorator.
Flowers A to Z
by Cecelia Hefferman
This book features huge colour plates with flower close-ups which would be
great as a coffee table book, but it is the sparse text that gives the pearls
of wisdom. Unusually set out, the text is numbered lists giving excellent
tips, hints and ideas under the headings 'Care and Conditioning', 'Growing'
and 'Arranging'.
The second section of the book features 2 pages on each flower, about 60
flowers have been selected in total. Each 2 page section covers the
name, how to maintain freshness and vase life, the flower meaning, arranging
and growing tips. Do not expect step by step instructions for specific designs.
