Zantedeschia Aethiopica ~ Arum Lily, Lily of the Nile, Calla Lily and its uses in floral art.  If you are looking for lots of ideas for using these wonderful flowers in flower arranging look no further than the backcopies of floral design magazine. More details here

Scientific Name: Zantedeschia Aethiopica
Family: Araceae
Common Names: Arum Lily, Lily of the Nile, Calla Lily (Calla is actually a separate genus)
Characteristics: ; Native to moist soils and wetlands of southern and eastern Africa, it has naturalized extensively in New Zealand. It is robust  and marsh-loving  with a thick rhizome, forming a tuft of fleshy-stalked,-green leaves 60-90 cm high, The  stalk 1-1.5 m high bears the large,  funnel-shaped rolling flaring waxy-white spathe 20-25 cm long, surrounding a bright yellow spadix. It likes to grow in moist areas, in shaded areas, and in New Zealand we find it growing wild in drains and along fence lines.

The sap may irritate skin or cause discomfort if ingested. The genus is named in honor of the Italian botanist and physician Giovanni Zantedeschi

Arum Lilies
by Helen Ford
of New Zealand

The Arum , also called the Calla Lily in some parts of the world, is used extensively as a commercial cut flower, for weddings and funerals. In Floral Art and Floristry it has a grace and form that makes it very popular for the contemporary designer.
To condition, put in water for 2-8 hours, cut the flower under water, Insert a toothpick into the stem and insert the toothpick into the floral foam. The stalk end only needs to be touching the foam to absorb water. Vase life is 6 - 10 days if the plant material is cut at right stage and conditioned properly.
