Ellerslie Flower Show, Auckland
New Zealand: floral art and flower highlights from November 2001
.The theme in the floral displays was "Summertime", the gardens ranged
from the futuristic to the cottage, from wild flowers to gothic! This is
only a small glimpse, and for more photos of Ellerslie Flower Shows over the last few years, check out the CDs available here.
Ellerslie was a place to
find the little parts of larger designs, which in their own right
were beautiful pieces of floral design.
A collection of scrubbed paint
pots, dribbled with paint to match the succulent planted inside. |
'Designer flowers' of Pukekohe
used bright straw hats to complement plaited New Zealand flax, leucospernums,
gerberas and red roses. |
A Flower fish in 'An Octopus's
Garden' by 'Sunnynook Flowers' of Auckland.Set on floral foam and wire
netting the fish was all rosebuds and grasses. |
Take a long table on the side
of a pool with white table linen, add a long trough of reeds and flax flowers,
add yellow candles at intervals and you have minimalist floral design for
the table! |
Float some Polystyrene balls
in your pool with reeds tied around them! Can you imagine this idea with
candles for the evening! |
'Iain Stephen's Floral Design'
of Auckland was a Gold Award Winner, with his 'Supper at Sunset'
room. A small part of that was this cage design using calla lilies, apricots,
moss, foliage, reeds and oriental lilies. |
And then there were the
floral design competitions! The public were in awe at the talents of the
floral artists and florists who took part, and there were ideas for everyone
who loves arranging flowers!
|
"Summertime, and Living
is Easy" was the title of this tableau by Valmae Cameron and Barbara Finch
of the Western Floral Art Group of Auckland, New Zealand.
Exquisite little details
made this a wonderful design to ponder for quite some time!
The woven shoes had tiny
succulents, shells, and plaited astelia and flax highlights to match the
design on the straw hat, and the plaited deck chair cover. |

Raspberry Ripple, Lemon and
Lime" are all ice-cream flavours in New Zealand and this was the title
for this Gold award winner form Mt Roskill Floral Art Group in Auckland.
Designers, Geraldine Bathurst, Caroline Watten and Dorothy Goodwin twisted
and shaped vine into giant cones. They used huge anthirriums, New Zealand
flax, skeletonised flax called Hapene, asparagus fern and chrysanthemums
to create their masterpiece. Plastic dripped off the cones as the 'ice
creams' seemed to melt in the summertime heat! |
