Pillars are wide, cylindrical
candles and are the foundation of a candle collection. Pillar candles
offer you both stability and beauty as they light your room with a steady
glow.Pillars are perfect for adding a relaxing candlelight glow to your
room or special occasion
Pillars are ideal in a flower
arrangement .Trim the wick very short every time you light it and it will
burn downwards into the candle core, leaving the outside still intact. This
makes the candle glow, the candle will last even longer than you thought
and this protects the foliage from burning as well.Of course it makes safety
sense never to leave a candle burning in an unattended room..

Celebrate
the 4th of July, or make an American patriotic arrangement with flowers! Flower arranging , with candles,
in red, white and blue is the floral design class this month.Change the
colours and these arrangements suit every celebration. Ideas
and techniques for flower arrangers, florists, floral artists and beginners, and if you want more each and every month subscribe to 'floral design' here
This
design is three placements in the colours of the American Flag, to make
a great entrance feature. They also become table placements for that special
celebration dinner!
Your
containers:
You
will need 3 shallow dishes, terracotta is ideal with 15" diametersThe colour of these dishes should complement the colour of your
design as the containers will be seen.
2-3
wide tall pillar candles for each arrangement, in varying heights, and
in the same colour as your arrangement. Obtain 3 stands of different heights.Joan
has used turned wood pedestals for the two tallest stands and an upturned
red-painted terracotta container for the lowest arrangement.
Mechanics
Put
the candles in the dish and if necessary attach them with "oasis fix" underneath
to keep them firm. The weight of the candles should keep them steady.Add
a small block of wet floral foam
which is in netting, or a cage, also to the bottom of the dish with the
top at least an inch over the dish rim.Don't use too much floral
foam as it will be too much to cover with foliage later. Hot glue the oasis
to the dish, or tape it with floral tape or sellotape.Take time over this
so everything is firm.
Set
the shallow dishes on the three stands and arrange the stands so they are
visually balanced. Stand back and look at the placements of the candles,
and the stands. Do they look pleasing? Is it all in proportion? Big candles
mean big stands, and big dishes. If not move the placements until you are
happy with the balance of the components.
Plant
material needed
All
designs
3
long drops of small leaved trailing foliage, such as ivy, asparagus fern,
coprosma, and some shorter pieces.
6-8
larger leafed, bold green leaves as contrast, such as fatsia, aralia, maple,
or similar
3-4
interesting branches with buds that curve, Joan used magnolia twigs.
Bottom
Red design: red roses, :red carnations
small
poinsettia, salvia, camellia leaves
top
Blue design: Hydrangeas, blue magnolias, or
blue irises ageratum, lime green geranium leaves or similar such as
lime green chysanthemums
Middle
White design: White roses:white
carnations,
or white lilies 3 aspidistra leaves, camellia
leaves.
The
Design
Take
the trailing foliage and place it into the front of the white design so
it trails right down to the top of the red design. Take another trailing
piece and attach to the white design so it curls around to the red
bottom design.Use the trails to create a flow from one placement to the
next.
Now
add Fatsia or a similar bold leaf to the front and back of each design,
the solid form adding contrast to the small leaved trailing plant.
Give
the design height by adding the budded branch, behind the blue candles.
Turn the branch sideways, not front on, to give the design dimension and
add another coming out the front at the bottom, of the same placement.
Put another branch behind the white candles.
Now
you work on each placement separately.
Blue
design.
This
design needs a lift as it is a dark colour, so it needs the contrast of
lime green. Use lime green geranium leaves, or chrysathumums. Place a silk
blue magnolia, or a fresh bue iris behind the blue candles, high above
the candles.Add others further down and into the centre of the arrangement.
Don't have all the flowers facing the same way. Add blue hydrangeas and
purple ageratum around the rest of the oasis.Between these add the lime
green leaves.
Manipulate
the leaves so they are not in the way of the flame, or the heat from the
candle. Take special care with this and cut off any leaves you think may
be too close.
Red
Design
Add
more of the trailing plant in short lengths around the base of the design
and then more fatsia leaves above that. Put the roses in next right around,
and tuck in the red carnations. Make the stalks all different lengths so
some are out and some are tucked right into the floral foam. Add camellia
leaves and salvia between these to contrast the green glossy leaves and
red tizzy form against the bolder roses and carnations.
When
your roses arrive put them in the fridge to make them last longer until
you are ready to use them, and put the arrangement outside every night
as the cooler air will help them keep longer. If they start to wilt, pull
them out, recut the end, place the stem in 1" of boiling water for 30 seconds,
then into cold water. and put back into the arrangement.
White
design
Roll
the three aspidistra leaves
and
staple the curls in place. When placing into the floral foam always
have
the roll facing upwards so they don't look like they are falling away.
It
makes the plant material smile! To make the rolled leaves look smart,
place
them together, rather than all over the designTake the leaves off the roses
to continue the uncluttered look and add white roses and the small white
carnations around the design, with glossy camellia leaves amongst the flowers,
placed separately.
Now
step back and assess your design.
Have
you put the three stands together; so each flows naturally to the other?
Does
your eye travel from white, to blue to red?
Is
the oasis wet enough?
|
| Now
here is the magic. Put the design in your featured position, but if you
are planning an outdoor event for 4th July, or a special summer barbeque,
each design can be taken off the stand and become a table decoration outside! |
.
Red! Red
glass candle. red arrangement, a single red rose and crystal for
dinner for two! Light the candles and let the evening begin!
|
Place
the main blue arrangement in the middle or side of the table and take out
the tall branches behind the candles and leave everything else as it is.
Set
the table in matching linen, light the candles and let the fireworks begin!
Next
morning, the arrangements go back on the stands and you will be able to
enjoy them for many more days! |
Take
a Blue theme...Do you plan to have an outdoor barbeque or romantic
dinner by the pool?
Candles,
floral Art and the sunset are an unbeatable combination! For the table,
add the blue candle in a glass at each place setting. |
|
Try
the same in white!
White
candle in glass,
added to the white rose design, and candles taken straight off the pedestal
stand. A crisp cotton lace cloth and crystal complete the setting. |
 |

Candles
: Illuminating Ideas for Creative Candlemaking and Enchanting Displays
This
is not a step-by-step "how to" book. It's more of a decorating and
idea guide. I loved the carved squash and gourds. I also loved
the simple groupings of candles -whites/creams, fun colors, fun shapes
and sizes. And who can resist the various themes: garden, seashore, etc..Click
