beginners lesson for leaves

Carla uses leaves a lot and bends, twists and weaves her plant material into sculptural art.Washington Palm fronds are shaped, and fan palm fronds are folded over and over on each other (below).

Ligularia leaves are folded back on themselves, and silver spear astelia is twisted and looped.
Red and green flax is wound around floral foam, and then moss is inserted into the roll. A skewer is attached and you have another effect!

Carla wanted to represent New Zealand as the land of the first light, and started with a circle of black, mounted on driftwood. A block of floral foam was set in the middle of the circle. She wanted to show the sun on one side and the moon on the other.
The sun side was a sea of strelitzia flowers all radiating for the centre. with three astelia leaves radiating out more from the top.
The moon side, with it's moonlight was a horizontal positioning of white iris, stock, silver astelia and white anthirriums.
She said, " We don't have silver astelia in Italy, If we did I would use it like parsley!"

  • Carla, in this design, wanted to provide a feeling for winter, an icy lake, tall trees covered in snow and their reflections.
The design was set on top of a glass container with two  clear circles, frosted at the edges, set to one side above this container to represent the lake.
Long, loosely wrapped stems of gypsophyla above and below the lake, became the snow covered trees and their reflections." In Italy we don't have many leaves on our trees in winter, but  you do in New Zealand,"she said, and she added  a twisted and variegated aspidistra leave among the gypsophyla.

White anthirriums and white skeletonised leaves added to the winter theme, and a few green anthirriums provided contrast.

Carla then twirled a bundle of long wire strands around the design and it was finished!

Glossy Liguaria leaves joined together to give a contrast of light and dark, shiny and glossy and cut palms provided drama in this design.

The palms grow wild in the National Parks South of Rome and Carla loves using them. She then added rolled flax leaves (above) and Heliconia ,"Because I know the grower," she said with a smile
The red vine was added last to whirl around the design . "In England,"Carla said," you say it is to provide space for the butterflies, in Italy, we provide space for the elephants!"

This design featured loops of silver astelia, and spathes, complemented by proteas. Carla said,"this is a really ugly container so my job is to hide it as much as possible". It was a perfect colour match to the spathes, and she draped cycad like fronds around it .Kaleanchoe leaves,  amongst the proteas and Heliconia completed the design.
