Unity

"A blending together of all parts when viewed as a whole" from 'Flair' published by FASNZ.

Unity is all about choosing your plant material and container carefully so every part of the design in used in harmony so all the parts look great when put together. Therefore the container colour, size and shape  should be considered as part of the design, often  this means bringing the colour of the container up into the design.

This unity gives a design feeling of all being connected, each part being in tune with each other part.

The wonderful design on the right which shows unity at its best,  is  by Raewyn Holloway,a junior floral artist. The design was spotted at the West Auckland Floral Art Competition 2002 where Raewyn won first prize in her section.

a

Also from the  West Auckland Floral Art Competition 2002, Junior Floral Artist, Lenore Jones  (left) used a black gloss round bowl with  twisted vines of the same colour to provide texture contrast, yet unity of colour. The red tulips followed the  round line of the bowl  and the curves were also repeated in the lily stems. Therefore the whole design has a round, feminine feeling giving  wonderful unity.
Jenny Perrillo, also a Junior  at the West Auckland Floral Art Competition 2002 designed this wonderful cornucopia (right) in white and green.  This colour scheme was the unifying feature and she then added textures, lines and mass to create an interesting and successful design.

From these three examples you can see unity doesn't just mean all the same colour as these three floral artists have used both monochromatic  and complementery colour schemes. It can be repetition of colour OR form, shape, texture or pattern.
